Dyscalculia is a specific and persistent difficulty in understanding numbers which can lead to a diverse range of difficulties with mathematics.  It will be unexpected in relation to age, level of education and experience and occurs across all ages and abilities.

People with dyscalculia will

  • lack understanding of basic number facts
  • have inefficient methods of calculating
  • rely on counting using fingers or objects
  • be unable to tell which of two numbers is larger
  • have a difficulty identifying the value of digits
  • struggle to estimate an amount
  • have difficulty telling the time
  • have difficulty seeing number patterns
Everyone has, at times, difficulties with learning maths, but a person with dyscalculia will have persistent difficulties from a young age.
